~ A Cut Above ~

Dave Smith, who took our ASA101 Basic Sailing Class in June 2023, sent the following comments.

~

I initially chose the Maryland School because it appeared more thorough, better organized, and more professional than the others.  I think the price for the ASA 101 class is a bargain for the length and level of instruction.

Captain Mummert was excellent. His depth of knowledge and expertise was obvious throughout the course. His confidence in his ability to keep us and the boat safe really helped me relax, and in so doing, helped me focus on learning stuff and actually enjoying the experience.  He is a great teacher and has an abundance of patience. It was a pleasure meeting him, he's a class individual.

I was concerned about passing the writen test at the end of the course, so I read the ASA book 3 times, and the blue spiral book only once. In retrospect, I should have read the blue spiral book (ASA 101 Training Plan) more closely, since I might have had a better handle on what to do on the boat. Having never been on a sailboat that size before, it didn't register until I was onboard.  The training plan was fundamental, during the class. It forced us to do jobs in an orderly, coherent manner and taught us to be thorough. I liked the checklists because it forced us to stay organized and work as a team.  Overall, I am very pleased with the course and the instruction.
