Online Coastal Navigation 2012 (ASA105)

Complete Coastal Navigation Course (ASA105) taught online in a live webinar on three Saturdays by Captain Tom Tursi, a USCG Licensed Ocean Master with over 50,000 miles of blue water ocean sailing and extensive coastal cruising

 March 17 & 31 + April 14, 2012
9:00am to 4:00pm US Eastern Standard Time (Zone 5W)

Course includes basic chart reading and interpretation, plotting techniques, compass reading corrections, bearings, fixes, running fixes, relative bearings, current vector corrections, chart symbols and publications such as Charts and Chart Catalogs, Coast Pilot, Light List, Tide and Current Tables, Notices to Mariners, Navigation Rules and much more. ASA105 Coastal Navigation Certification available.

Online Celestial Nav 2012 (ASA107)

Complete Celestial Navigation Course (ASA107) taught online in a live webinar on three Saturdays by Captain Tom Tursi, a USCG Licensed Ocean Master with over 50,000 miles of blue water ocean sailing using celestial navigation.

 Jan 14 & 28 + Feb 11, 2012
9:00am to 4:00pm US Eastern Standard Time (Zone 5W)

Course includes celestial navigation theory and terminology, demonstration of the sextant and other instruments used in ocean navigation, ocean charts and plotting sheets, log keeping and dead reckoning plotting methods, celestial shooting techniques, calculation procedures for the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars, noon sights, Polaris calculations, locating stars and planets, compass calibration using the Sun, estimated positions, current vectors, running fixes and more.

Course Fees: 
$490 per student (non-certifying)
includes books but no testing or certification

$650 per student (certifying)
includes books and ASA testing and certification

 

ASA Testing & Certification

When you are ready to take your ASA Certification exam, you can take it at a Public Library of your choosing. You can select the library and date, notify us of this plus the name of a contact person at the library, and we'll send testing materials and instructions to the library. Upon completion of the exam, the library will mail your completed exam to us for grading. We'll grade the exam and return results to you, and process the ASA certification.

Webinar Setup

We will conduct this online class using the Go To Meeting Webinar format where there will be on-screen and audio interaction between Instructor and Students very much like occurs in an actual classroom setting. 

Online Software: 
You do not need to purchase any special software to join this class, however your computer  does need to meet the system requirements listed below.

We'll conduct this online class using a Go-To-Meeting Webinar format with on-screen and audio interaction between Instructor and Students very much like occurs in an actual classroom setting. After you register for this course and prior to the first course date, you can  receive assistance, if needed, from our office staff in setting up the Go- To- Meeting software on your computer.  

You do not need to have a Go-To-Meeting subscription to attend this class. You do, however, need a cable modem, DSL or better Internet connection. System requirements are as follows:

On a PC

  • Internet Explorer® 7.0 or newer, Mozilla® Firefox® 3.0 or newer or Google Chrome 5.0 or newer (JavaScript and Java enabled)
  • Windows® 7, Vista, XP or 2003 Server
  • Cable modem, DSL or better Internet connection
  • Minimum of Pentium® class 1GHz CPU with 512 MB of RAM (recommended) (2 GB of RAM for Windows® Vista)
  • Audio will be via a regular phone, or participants wishing to connect to audio using VoIP will need a fast Internet connection, a microphone and speakers. (A USB headset is recommended.)

On a Mac®

  • Safari 3.0 or newer, Firefox® 3.0 or newer or Google Chrome 5.0 or newer (JavaScript and Java enabled)
  • Mac OS® X 10.4.11 – Tiger® or newer
  • PowerPC G4/G5 or Intel processor (512 MB of RAM or better recommended)
  • Cable modem, DSL, or better Internet connection
  • Audio will be via a regular phone, or participants wishing to connect to audio using VoIP will need a fast Internet connection, a microphone and speakers. (A USB headset is recommended.)

Home Study

Coastal Navigation (ASA-105) and Celestial Navigation (ASA-107) as described above, may also be completed through our Home Study Program.

Fee: $375 per course
including books and ASA exam and certification
