Daniel VanWinkle, Ph.D.
Dan has
sailed for 40 years. His early
years were spent rebuilding wooden boats (Penquins and Lightnings) and sailing
on inland lakes in the Midwest. After
college, he served as lieutenant aboard ship in the U.S. Navy.
During a career in agricultural research, he remained active in sailing
by teaching USCG Auxiliary sailing and coastal navigation courses, serving as
captain/instructor in his company’s sailing club, and chartering
on the Chesapeake. He is a USCG Auxiliary
Master Instructor. Offshore sailing includes trips as crew/navigator to Bermuda,
the Dry Tortugas, and the Bahamas on boats from 24 to 100 ft.
Dan currently holds a USCG 100Ton, near coastal license with
sail/auxiliary endorsement, a Marine Radio Operator’s Permit and four levels
of ASA instructor certification. Dan
owns a Cape Dory 25D and enjoys coastal cruising and sailing on Barnegat Bay and
along the New Jersey coast. He teaches at our basic level on Chesapeake Bay.
