David Appleton

Captain David Appleton, serves as our Head Instructor, responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and technical management of our Instructor cadre. He holds a USCG 100 Ton Ocean Master License, and is an American Sailing Association Instructor Evaluator, with over 90,000 ocean and coastwise miles on sailing craft to 60 feet and another 25,000 miles on US Navy vessels.

A lifelong teacher and sailor, David spent 16 years as a professor of English and Theatre, and 10 years as a freelance theatrical director before going sailing full time. He has been associated with us since 1993, teaching all ASA levels and contributing to the development our advanced training programs. He's skippered over 24 of our ocean training cruises to and from Bermuda, Bahamas, St. Thomas and Trinidad; and more than 27 of our DelMarVa and New England Advanced Coastal Training cruises, as well as many of our basic and intermediate sailing courses. David also skippers deliveries and instructional voyages for his own Appleton Marine, Inc., between points in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and beyond. He counts teaching and learning from our highly motivated sailing students his most rewarding experiences.
