Descriptions of these completed webinars are as follows: Captain Lee Tucker, MD presented the following topic: Medical Preparations for the Offshore Voyage Advance preparation of the vessel and crew are paramount in the successful completion of an offshore voyage. In this webinar, Captain Lee Tucker, a physician for over 30 years, will discuss appropriate medical preparations to be made prior to embarking on extended voyages. Crew selection strategies, pre-departure crew medical evaluations and the creation of comprehensive offshore medical response kits will be discussed in detail. The presentation will describe currently available shore-based emergency support services --- how to select them pre-departure and access them once underway. Although not intended as an inclusive review of all medical emergencies afloat, common and potentially catastrophic medical emergencies at sea will be discussed with tactics for their prevention and management. Captain Eric Petterson & Carleen Petterson presented the following topic: Circumnavigating
the North Atlantic
How one couple turned a dream into a reality! With this seminar, Capt.
Eric Petterson and his wife Carleen hope to entice you with the thrills,
challenges, and beauty of ocean passage making as a couple. They
will cover such topics as boat preparations, personal preparation, weather
sources, weather and sea conditions encountered, daily routines, watch
schedules, and provisioning. Eric and Carleen made this cruise in
2004 and 2005 on their Island Packet 35 and they love to share their
sailing experiences as well as their photos of Bermuda, Azores, Madeira
and Canary Islands. Captain Tom Tursi presented the following topic: Navigation Aids Inland and coastal waters are particularly hazardous to groundings and sinkings due to wind, waves, rocky shoals, submerged obstructions, strong currents, tidal swings of water depth, restricted visibility from fog, rain and darkness, other vessel traffic, shore lights and more. The US Coast Guard and local agencies deploy a comprehensive array of navigational aids including buoys, beacons, lights, dayboards, racons, bells, whistles, gongs, horns and more to assist mariners in safe conduct through these areas in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions. This seminar will describe these navigational aids and their meanings, sources for authoritative description of specific Nav Aids in specific locations, and how mariners can acquire the latest change information in their area of interest for use in pre-planning a cruise. Captain Tom Tursi presented the following topic: Docking Techniques This webinar will address a critical and often overlooked aspect of safe boating, especially since docking accidents are the most common of boating mishaps. The reality is that most boaters lack both the knowledge and practical experience in this crucial area. The essential docking techniques and concepts will be presented including: preparing the boat and crew, docking and undocking procedures, wind and current effects, close quarter maneuvering, and use of spring lines. The Maryland School of Sailing and Seamanship has long been known as the place to learn how to "put that big boat in a small slip". Please join for this webinar presented by Captain Tom Tursi, who is the author of the ASA Docking Endorsement text.
Captain Eric Petterson presented the following topic: DELMARVA
Circumnavigation- Captain Eric and his wife Carleen did a two-handed trans-Atlantic round trip cruise a few years ago on their Island Packet 35, and Eric has taught for us for many years. He has sailed this DELMARVA circumnavigation cruise a number of times, sailed extensively in New England and the Caribbean, and is a treasure trove of information and experience for advanced seamanship topics. Join us for his seminar... You won't be disappointed. Captain Lee Tucker presented the following topic: Storm Tactics and Use of the Sea Anchor Every sailor asks the questions:
Captain Lee Tucker, who's been "out there" under storm conditions a number of times, will answer some of these questions, and discuss heaving to, sail combinations, sea anchor deployment, and more. He will also take your questions for a thorough review and examination of this important subject. Captain Tom Tursi presented the following topic: Offshore Emergencies This seminar will include a listing of more than 40 potential emergencies, methods for establishing the appropriate level of concern for each emergency, measures that crewmembers can take to avoid or mitigate these emergencies, and a detailed discussion of the top 20 emergencies.
Captain Tom Tursi presented the following topic: Man
Overboard Chances of recovering an overboard crewmember at sea are slim except under the most perfect conditions. But add strong winds, large waves, fog, rain, darkness, confusion, lack of a clear plan, malfunctioning equipment and tangled lines, and you have a recipe for almost certain failure. Anything you can do to minimize these factors will increase your chances for success and may save a life. Join us for a seminar covering the boat maneuvers necessary to minimize the time and distance needed to return to a crewmember in the water, methods for retrieval, and procedures used to stay onboard in the first place.
Captain Tom Tursi presented the following topic: Weather for Sailors This seminar will cover the basic weather system knowledge essential to small yacht crews using the limited information available at sea. The basic structure, movement and interactions of cold and warm air masses, cold fronts, low pressure systems, and tropical systems will be discussed, plus some of the more common radio and satellite weather sources. This seminar is primarily about weather and not about onboard electronics.
