Danger Bearing

Hints

Follow these guidelines to achieve the accuracy contained in the School solution:

  • Print the chart section and the compass rose and tape them together with the lines of latitude and longitude accurately aligned to allow drawing True lines on the chart.

  • Locate your position at the Latitude & Longitude given in the question.

  • Draw a line on the chart from your position to the Silo. This is your danger bearing in degrees True (answer #1)

  • Calculate the change in Magnetic Variation from the date on the compass rose to the date of the question by using the annual change in Variation given on the compass rose. (Note that the Magnetic Variation of this compass rose was 15º00'W in 1985 and was increasing by 3' per year.)

  • Round off the resulting Magnetic Variation to the nearest whole degree using conventional rounding procedures. (Round up for a half degree or more, and round down if less than half a degree)

  • Convert the degrees True of the danger bearing to degrees Magnetic by applying the corrected Magnetic Variation.

  • Convert the degrees Magnetic of the danger bearing to degrees per ship's compass (psc) using the deviation table (answer #2).

  • Decide if you want to keep to the right or left of the danger bearing as you proceed past Sakonnet Point, and if your compass bearing on the Silo needs to be greater or less than the danger bearing to maintain this positioning (answer #3)
