Comments on Foul Weather Gear
The Foul Weather Gear worn by most sailors is too hot, too stiff, too uncomfortable and too expensive for the sailing that most of us do primarily in the Spring and Summer months in moderate temperatures. I've gotten away from these types of Foulies and now use the comfortable light weight three layer system developed and extensively used by outdoor trekkers and climbers for most of my sailing. This three layer system serves for 95% of the time, and I have the Mustang Exposure Suit for the relatively rare extreme conditions.
The three layer system consists of Polypropylene Longjohns next to your skin, a Fleece thermal layer next, and a waterproof Outer Shell. This system has the ability to wick perspiration away from your skin and disperse it to the heavens, reduce loss of body heat, and prevent wind and water from entering from the outside. The beauty is that it is effective in keeping you dry and warm while being light and comfortable to wear. But also, it is versatile in that you can wear one, two or three layers depending on conditions. I often wear just the shell pants when on watch at night because 99% of the time it's wet up there either from rain, waves, spray or just plain dew.
One more thought: I do not use the Bib type pants because, if I'm all suited up with three layers plus a harness, it's very hard to make a pit stop. I use waist-high pants so that I can do the pit stop without half undressing in the process.
I've cited the Helly Hansen brand name in the accompanying links, but there are many brands to choose from. Inquire at Camping or Outdoor stores.
Happy Sailing!
